More on Sarah Mariann Martland…
My Professional Background
TRAUMA SUPPORT PRACTITIONER & CONSULTANT (AND FOUNDER/DIRECTOR FOR TRAUMA & CO.)
For many years I worked in the charity sector, most recently for Victim Support, where I worked with people who have experienced a range of traumas, abuses and hate crimes in supporting them to navigate their complex, individual needs, and prior to that I supported unpaid carers in similar ways. All of which provided extensive training and a depth of experience that has been invaluable to my work.
With these working experiences and ongoing training (in addition to my own personal experience in navigating the world while living with complex trauma), in 2017 I created/founded (and now am the Director of) Trauma & Co. - a collaborative organisation that aims to support people living and working with trauma and its complex intersections with being human.
I work here as a Trauma Support Practitioner & Consultant, providing 1-1 and community support and training to both those living with and those working with trauma (if you work with humans, you work with trauma).
WRITER. CREATIVE.
I am also a writer, a creative, a human who (most often) writes into the complex spaces of life. Writing and art has saved my life, repeatedly, and I am a huge advocate for its power. My most recent writing can now be found on Substack and I .regularly share more informal musings across my personal social media pages - @sarahmariannmartland & @traumaandco (on FB & IG) I have also had the honour to have articles published on websites (too many to link and some of which I want less association with now as my values have evolved and some of my work can be found under my previous writer name Mariann Martland.)
ONLINE BUSINESS SUPPORT
In the years before I began working in the charity sector I worked in business/admin roles in the corporate world. I hold a First Class BA(Hons) degree in Events/Business Management, which indirectly led to my work in the charity sector, when I realised how I did not belong in the corporate world, and so instead I started working in the charity sector, initially in administrative roles, before moving into support roles. With that, and to support me in making my work for more accessible and sustainable, I used to work in Online Business Support roles for helping professionals in small and solo businesses whose work intersected with the kind of work we do at Trauma & Co.
Professional Support & Other Roles/Associations
Supervision
I access private 1-1 therapeutic supervision on regular basis for case consultation, support around developing my work and to make sure I am taking care of my own needs while I do this work.
Memberships & Community Groups
I am also a part of various membership and community groups and I access professional peer support, both in the areas around Trauma Treatment/Support and in Liberatory/Anti-Oppressive Practice.
Other roles
I am currently on the advisory board for We Make The Path - a CIC supporting people living with chronic illness.
Training
Note: I personally value lived experience, personal learning and other ways of training over formal education - because along with fully acknowledging the privileges I have had to be able to receive such education and training, I am also aware that others who have not had these privileges might have just as much knowledge, skill and experience as I without the recognition, AND much of my own knowledge and experience has also come from personal learning, along with 1-1 and community work, and uncertified training, which is less quantifiable. But for those who find these things interesting here are some of the training/education I have received since 2011 (I’ll spare you the GCSEs & A-Levels!!), beginning with most recent…
